Summer Camp at Home - Art Camp

Monday, June 18, 2018

During the summer break you have to get creative if you don't want your kids to tell you all the time "I'm bored!" or seeing them on their electronics for longer periods.

We came up with with the idea of summer camps at home because let's be honest camps are expensive specially if you have two or more kids. Every week we have a theme and this way you find activities, arts, crafts, movies or places that are related to the theme of the week. My kids love to have a calendar with the ideas because they can know what to expect for the week.

We started the summer with ART CAMP!
This one is easy because you can basically paint anything you want and get creative. Some ideas are:

SIDEWALK CHALK ART
With the summer heat this idea is best to do it early morning or late afternoon. They can get creative and draw anything they want. They should paint the whole street if they keep saying I'm bored (JK). Draw a hopscotch and turn it into a game. I love to draw them rainbows, balloons, stars and take them pictures to make them part of it.

PAINT ROCKS
For me the one place to go for arts and crafts is Hobby Lobby or visit your local craft store. They have a bag of large smooth rocks great to paint little critters. I recommend using acrylic paint and seal them with Mod Podge Outdoors https://amzn.to/2LMlqgR So far they have survived rain, dirt, water sprinklers and looking great! Now they are part of our garden.

COLOR ME MINE www.colormemine.com
Is a paint your own pottery studio and they have many locations. We got a deal at Groupon to save us around $20. You visit the store to pick your own ceramic piece and paint as you wish. They have mugs, piggy banks, plates and many more pieces to pick. Is unlimited paint so add a lot of color to your piece from inside to outside, add details, add your name, you name it. Please note you leave your piece at the store for them to glaze and fire for later pick up.

CANVAS PAINTING
I got them a set of 10 canvas at Hobby Lobby for $6 (with the 40% coupon).  If your kids are like mine and get a little frustrated for not knowing what to paint, show them other kids painting from the internet so they can get some ideas, also abstract paint is the easiest one!

ART MUSEUM www.mfah.org
Visit your local Art Museum. This might not be the best option for small kids and to be honest my older kids where not that excited but at least they saw something different and learned something new. Sometimes for my kids just getting out of the house is fun! Here in Houston, TX they currently have an exhibit called the Big Bambú that is breathtaking. It is amazing what they were able to do with just bamboo! Maybe they have some great exhibits at your local museums.

I will always do Art Week every summer with my kids (while they still want) so I will keep adding more ideas as we work on them.
Hope you have fun this summer.
XOXO
